Bible reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 TPT “The Lord Yahweh has equipped me with the anointed, skilful tongue of a teacher — to know how to speak a timely word to the weary. Morning by morning, he awakens my heart. He opens my ears to hear his voice, to be trained to teach. The Lord Yahweh has opened my ear, and I did not resist; I did not rebel. I offered my back to those who flogged me and my cheek to those who tore out my beard. I never hid my face from demeaning insults or from those who spit on me. The Lord Yahweh empowers me so I am not humiliated. For that reason, with holy determination, I will do his will and not be ashamed.”
As Christians, there’s nothing more valuable than hearing God’s voice. I used to think it was only for biblical figures in the Old Testament or special individuals anointed by God. However, I’ve come to realize that this belief couldn’t be further from the truth. In John 10:27, Jesus states, “My sheep hear my voice and follow me.” While reading God’s word is undoubtedly crucial for every Christian (2 Timothy 3:15-17), merely reading Scripture can render it as nothing more than a collection of wise words. It is the Holy Spirit that brings those words to life in our hearts, making it relevant to our lives and current situations.
Isaiah 50:6 reveals that our capacity to hear God originates from Him. He awakens our hearts and sensitises our ears to His voice. This voice isn’t necessarily audible but is often an inner prompting or conviction. God communicates through dreams, visions, thoughts, or gentle nudges, prompting us towards His will. Yet, His words never contradict the bible, serving as a reliable guide to confirm whether we are truly hearing God’s voice. Therefore, it is paramount that we know the bible inside out because the written word of God is true and stops us from falling from any deception of the devil.
Hearing God’s voice should be a daily experience (“morning by morning”). To cultivate this, consistent time spent with Him through praise, worship, prayer, and Scripture reading is essential. Building this routine will open us up to hear from God and empower us to do His will. As we surrender daily and seek God’s voice, He will transform our quiet time. Once mere words, the Scriptures will come alive through the workings of the Holy Spirit (John 14:26, Hebrews 4:12), providing clarity, peace, wisdom, and empowerment to do God’s will.
Even Jesus, the Son of God, set an example by prioritising time alone in communion with the Father (Mark 1:35). Emulating His practice will only enrich our spiritual journey.
So, let us embrace the privilege of hearing God’s voice today :).
